Walk for your Health

Walk for your Health

Gloria Tao Yin Lam

I've read an article about stepping as exercise. In my point of view, it is suitable for people in any age at any time, what it needs is a pair of legs. As we know, citizens in Hong Kong live under great pressure, every second is not allowed to be wasted, therefore, more people suffered from heart disease and diabetes due to lack of exercise. To tackle the problem, I suggest Hongkongers to climb stairs instead of taking lift, students can go to school on foot. In a research, we find that the time needed to take the lift was obviously longer than that required to use the stairs going both up and down, the result showed that it helps us saving time. Furthermore, people with enough exercise can promote a better performance in our work.
To conclude, no matter how busy are we, take a balance between exercise and work is a must.

Life on the Street

Life on the Street

Samson Shum Sze Cham

I have read a news entitled "Life on the street" in Young Post. Nowadays Hong Kong teenagers are different from those in the past. They like spending the night outside but not prefer to stay at home. The usually play computer games at internet cafes or at parks in public housing estates. To maintain the friendship, some of the teenagers even spend three to four nights a week out on the streets with their friends. The main reason is thier school life. Take Wai-yin as an example. As he could not promote to Form two, he didn't want to go to school anymore. He became depressed and wasn't interested in any of the subjects taught in school, so he spent time with their friends at night.

Besides studies, I think another reason why teenagers hang out on the street is the lack of care of parents. Some parents return home at midnight due to working, and they hardly spend time communicating with their daughters and sons, so making them feel bored. To eliminate loneliness, playing with their friends is their final solution.

It is not advisable to hang out on the streets at night. When they stay out late, they will become preys of triad societies. Being enticed by their friends, they will become drug addicts and break the law. Hanging out on the street at night also affects our health. We will become tired in the next morning, owing to the lack of sleep.

Pandas

Pandas

Leung Tse Fung

I have just read an article about the giant pandas which are Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. The news is talking about these two panda debut on Valentine’s Day. But because the giant pandas had spent about a month and a half in the indoor display area, which is carefully noise-controlled, Yuan Yuan was afraid of the visitors’ noise. Tuan Tuan was not affected. After I read this news, I want to go to Taipei to see the pandas and to compare that with Ocean Park’s pandas. Also, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan debut on Valentine’s Day, I hope they can love each other. Moreover, a lot of visitors brought their partners to see the pandas as a present. So Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan have a important role on that day.

Poverty

Poverty

Elton Chan

The word "poverty" means different to different people. Sad to say, Hong Kong teenagers regard poverty as a lack of money to spend on entertainment and labeled goods, they feel a sense of inferiority just because they are "poor" However, as we recognize the plight of people struggling in the third world countries, we understand what really a shame is! Although we believe that everyone is equal, it cannot be denied that while someone are enjoying the fruits of high technology, some people in the world are still suffering from poverty! The reason for poverty in the world is population explosion with lack of natural resources. Many regions in Mainland China fall into this category. Another reason for poverty is the system of government, while leaders ruthlessly strive for money the are destroying people's means of living. What the government can do are retraining people and helping them to find new job. In those African countries, people are also suffering from a deadly disease. They are very poor, how about us? We are living in a high level of living standard. Being a human, do we have responsibility helping those people living in poor? What do you think of poverty?

Stress and Pressure

Stress and Pressure

Connie Ho

I have just read an article about" Help you to cope with stress" from young post.

As we know that many pressure may come from our parents, our friends and ourselves, For example, we want to get better result on each examination and the peer may smoke or drink alcohol that they will say if you don't do that with them than you won't be part of them. Not only your  friends and yourself, but coming from your parents. Such as they always advise us 'finish your homework, practise your piano, make sure you can get A grades in every subject, study harder etc.

Actually, what is stress? According to the article, stress is the way our bodies react to pressure either from the outside world---school, exta curricular activities, family, friends or from within yourself, as wanting to be perfect!

In fact, stress is a normal reaction to life, as the hypothalamus release two chemicals into our blood system, which produce a series of change in our body, so that sometimes the heart rate and our breathing would be increased or our impulses quicken. For the short term of pressure is better for our bodies, but for long term, that will affect  our physic and emotion.

Taking me as an example, I wanted to try to suicide for one year ago, because my studies got a very bad result and my family ignored me every time. I am  lonely and isolated. I think if I leave this world, I had no need to face all the problems any more.

However after I talking with my confidante about this stress problem. I have a positive attitude facing any problem and make a list of things that are causing me stress and discuss with friends, parents and teachers.

Lastly, I think if you have stress you can share it with someone that you trust ,find hobbies you enjoy, exercise regularly, eat balanced meal and prioritizing by making a list of tasks you have to do and then tackle then in order of importance.

The Importance of Chinese in Singapore

The Importance of Chinese in Singapore

Ho Shuk Ying Connie

I have read an article about the importance of Chinese in Singapore in young post at November 25 2008. In Singapore, many Singaporean also speak English to each other at home. There are few chance for them to learn Chinese. So that their parents put more effort into getting their children to read Chinese books. According to the article many teachers point out that the students don't like to study Chinese, because it is difficult for them, I cannot understand, as I think learning English is more difficult than learning Chinese, such as we have to organise the right sentences and one word have more than one meaning!

In order to increase the interest of Chinese for the Singaporean, the publishers are responding by releasing more Chinese-language books and these books were showcased at many book fairs over 2 weekends. Also many parents would buy over $1,520 of Chinese books for them, however it is very clever for them to buy comics book, like Doraemon. Because if it contains 100% of Chinese, I believe anyone also wants to throw it out. There are many successful examples. Junior high student Jasmine See was not keen on Chinese book, but she was interested in the cover of Chinese novel that her mother brought from the library. Now she becomes the top Chinese-language.

After I read it. I think we also have to work hard on our studies, especially English, I believe

we all have an ability to deal with it. Moreover, it is useful for future anymore!

Too Much Pressure or What

Too Much Pressure or What

Hui Lok Yee Katrina

On 21st Nov, 2008, there was one more teacher put an end to her life by jumping down from her apartment. Three teachers committed suicide within these two months because of pressure. The posthumous papers left by the teacher who dead recently, stated that she experienced a huge stress from job. This was the main cause she took her own life. The news reported that teachers got depression since they worked extremely hard to stick at teaching standard demanded by school.

If teachers are facing stress, it affects the teaching. It further influences the next generation. It is a serious problem. Hong Kong government should take immediate action to tackle the problem. Inaction is not an option. I think reducing minimum number of students that school needed to recruit, from 30 to 20, is a way to solve the problem. It creates more teaching positions and reduces stress facing by teachers. There is no doubt to fix the problem and build a better campus for students.

Effects of the ‘Tsunami’

Effects of the ‘Tsunami’

Kung Chau Ping Phoebe

I have just read an article about the layoffs of HSBC from the South China Morning Post. This is the second round of layoffs and 450 jobs will be slashed.

Because of the current financial crisis,450 people were given a notice of termination. 'In this day and age, no guarantees of job security can be given. 'said by Mr Peter Wong, the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Crop executive director, in a letter to staffs. This time's dismissals involve employees from every level, from managers to cleaners, with all major branches losing two to three staffs. However, it is really lucky that the sacked staffs can receive equivalent of eight months' salary plus pension entitlements. The bank said it will help them to find new roles inside and outside the bank.

In my opinion, I totally agree with the words of Mr Wong. Because of the financial tsunami, nobody can be given the job security. Although all staffs work very hard and their companies is large enough to employ a lot of employees, in this stage, they also have the chance to lose their jobs. I think the students today must work harder and harder, if they are sacked one day, they do not need to worry that they cannot apply for a new job because of their high educational level.

The relationship between the Business cycles and us.

The relationship between the Business cycles and us.

Kenneth, Tang Chun Shing

I have read an article form South China Morning Post at November 22. It about the Hong Kong’s Exchange Fund (i.e. the reserve that backs the Hong Kong dollar) is set to record a full-year loss for the first time in Hong Kong’s history. 83.3 billion Hong Kong dollars was lost for the first nine months in this year due to the global financial crisis. The chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Joseph Yam Chi -Kwong said that, the total loss in this year may more than 100 billion Hong Kong dollars. The economy of Hong Kong it seems to be recession.

Form my basic knowledge of CE Economic, unemployment rate and inflation will increase under recession in a city. Now, it seems to have no any side effect to us because the recession just beginning to start. Fortunately, when we finish the Form 7 after about one and half year, the economy of Hong Kong will under depression. The unemployment rate will be the highest. That mean we will very difficult to find a job if we can’t promote to university. But if you can get the degree in the university in the future, you will find a job very easily because the economy in Hong Kong at this time should be recovery. I hope that all 6B classmates can promote to university!

The war bomb

The war bomb
Kelvin Leung Man Lok

Recently, a war-time bomb was found near the old Star Ferry pier in Central. It is the second case in the past two weeks. After the Japanese bomb, a British bomb which is six itches in diameter was also dug, experts estimated the bomb can explode a distance of 100 meters radius.

The bomb not only damage people during the war, but also may be dangerous in the future since it may explode at anytime. There may still have many bombs which can explode in a wide area have not been dug. The danger caused by those bombs must not be foreseen. The government must focus on the problem and find ways to minimize the number of unearthed bombs in order to protect the citizens. In the other hand, the construction workers should pay more attention when they are working since disaster may happen with any carelessness.

Somali Pirates Take Hostages

Somali Pirates Take Hostages
Brian Mak

Since an Iran freighter [Delight] had captured by the Somali’s pirate. 25 crews have been taken to coast of Kenya. The hostages did not release at this time. There were occurred 3 cases of capturing the ships including this. Moreover, many ships need to go to South Africa to go Asia .It need more time and money.

Somali, located on the east Africa, facing the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
The incident occurred at Gulf of Aden. Many ships from Europe to Asia or Australasia need to go through this area .The pirates captured the ships at this area. WE navy and NATO warship has increasing the patrol times at that area to maintain the peace.

Why the incidents occurred three times? Somali has had civil war since 1991, many citizens are very poor. They need to do these things to get money for buying their own food. So the world needs to find a way to solve these problems.

Better Life, Wider Gap

Better Life, Wider Gap

Ada Lau

I have just read an article from the BBC news. The article talks about the lives of Chinese have improved but there is still a very big gap between the rich and the poor. After the Beijing Olympics, the economies of China have a great improvement. Just a week before, most of the Chinese celebrates the 30 years of economic reforms. According to the recent survey, it shows that between 1978 and 2007, rural poverty fell from 30.7% to just 1.6%. The most important reason of the result is just the human development; this is the most stunning achievement.

The article says that there is a problem that is emerged with not everyone benefiting equally from rapid economic expansion. The east urban of China is richer than the west urban; there is a large gap between different social groups. It is because the citizens just put capitals in one particular place and no one wants to invest in the hinterland. Therefore no improvement will exist in those places.

In my opinions, the rural people is very poor since they just gain a little profit a year and it is difficult for them to move to the big cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and so on. I suggest that the government ought to encourage the citizens to have an investment on the rural also the government should put more capital that increases the standard of their lives. The rural people should be supported by the government, so they can be easier to earn income or learn more skills that move to the city to work.

Tackle Stress

Tackle Stress

Wendy

I had read an article about stress. There are many reasons which will cause stress, the pressure come from school, your friends, even the high expectation of yourself. Under a long term pressure will cause the following problem, a high heart beat rate, difficult to sleep, etc. If you have the above characteristics, you must be careful because you may be under stress.

What can we do if we are under stress? Firstly, we can listen to soft music. Listening music can relax our emotion and solve our stress .Also, we should do exercise. During doing exercise, our body will produce a type of chemical which can make us happy. In addition, exercise is good for our health. Finally, we can talk about our feeling with friends. They may give some useful suggestion to you.

Dangerous Food Around Us

Dangerous Food Around Us

Nicole Tam

Although this article has been posted for a few weeks, I think it is quite impressive and interesting.  Therefore I would like to share with all of you.

Have you ever heard of a food additive which is called MSG, monosodium glutamate?  Fear of this additive came about in the 60s, when most people believe MSG is harmful to our bodies.  However, little scientific proof against MSG has been shown.  Nevertheless, public hysteria has won the battle over scientific logic.  And MSG continues to be avoided by health-conscious diners.  At the same time, some restaurateurs highly emphasize that their restaurants are" MSG-free" in order to attract more healthy diners.

In fact, MSG is hidden in the majority of processed ingredients, such as oyster sauce, XO sauce and ketchup that are used by every kitchen, even in a five-star hotel!  Let's say normal ketchup costs $10 while an organic one costs $50.  For most restaurants that sort of pricing is just not workable. That’s why this may raise a doubt whether the diners can truly enjoy a meal without MSG.  Here I will quote what the restaurateurs replied, “All our stocks and broths are homemade without MSG. However, we also buy bottled sauces from outside sources. We have no control over what the manufacturers put in those, and we do not conduct tests to see if they contain MSG.”  So isn’t there a contradiction?  Do you think that the restaurants are really innocent?

In my point of view, it is impossible for me to believe that all the restaurateurs are innocent.  There must be some cunning restaurateurs putting profits in their first consideration instead of customers.  After reading this article, one thing that I will bear in mind is not to fully believe what the people claim.

First Job for the New President

First Job for the New President

Lunny Lam

The news came from Yahoo! News.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081109/ap_on_go_pr_wh/presidents_in_crises;_ylt=AgsUrGq8VwIot5CMQsUEYris0NUE

The new American President, Obama, is facing an economic crisis. When Obama joined the election, he said "We need change!" . There is no doubt about his ability. But the expected result is always affected by another factors. He is not just facing a local problem, also an international problem. He wants to solve the problems. Money! No money no talk! I have discussed this question with my sister, How Obama can make incomes? We have a very finny answer. Because Obama is so popular, more than all artists, singers, stars..... So he can make some "Obama products" such as signed photos, Obama T-shirt, cups...... just all things are printed his face on. We think it can bring America a large income. Haha, joke only! I believe that Obama can do it because all american have the same target, same dream.

Pollution Problem

Pollution Problem

Theresa Chan

I had read the South China Morning Post last week, one of the news title is environmental salvation may a case of smoke and mirrors It is true that the air pollution problem also the global warming become more and more serious in the recent years. Some big firms are working on varying sea-based projects. They have developed several ways to reduce those problems.
But those methods will only work years later, and cannot solve the problem of great amount of emission. Besides, those projects need a large amount of money and human afford. So I think the thing we should do now is to decrease the amount of pollutant emission. If the output is decreased, the pollution problem will be improved.

Bad Breath

Bad Breath

Connie Ho

I had read the article from youngpost about the bad breath. Did you have a problem about

halitosis? Or do you need to stand a miles apart from your friends or families? I strongly believe that all of you also have been experienced it in the past already. Not only you and me, but also Hong Kong people. When I am having a conversation with them, I will worried that! One of the main reason is that we do not care our teeth! If we have poor dental hygiene and gum disease, that will cause the bad breath, I guess most of the Hong Kong people would not brush and floss their teeth regularly everyday. Too busy? Too troublesome? I agree that it is an excuse. It is very terrible that the food particles stay in mouth for a long time? Actually, how can they bear it? Except the dental hygiene, but also

diet that we eat everyday, including garlic. onion and some spices. These food release stronger smells too. So if you are these food's supporter, I suggest you all should always do the best of your dental hygiene!

For this problem, I propose you all should drink water as it  helps keep reducing the bacteria from your mouth. And having a checking of teeth every year. If you don't want to feel embarrassed about your mouth, you must to treat it seriously!

Musical youth

Musical youth
Tusi Yuk Hing

I have just read an article from the South China Morning Post. The article is talking about musical youth.
Last week, students at King George V School had a concert in lunchtime. The KGV art teacher who thought of this idea said that he wanted students to realise the commercial value of art and how it can lead to a professional career. The students said that when they hold the first performance, they were really scared. But after the performance, they always receive positive feedback, gives them a real confidence. Therefore, they will not be afraid in the performance again.

I think this idea is creative. Students can use lunchtime to hold a concert and everyone who are interested also can join it. It can give an opportunity to the music player to show off and the performers can gain a lot of experience. And it is a chance for students to enhance their confidence. Also, it gives time to students to relax.

The Election in The USA

The Election in The USA

Ng Ka Ho Tony

Last Friday I have watched a TV programme that talked about the American Election 2008. This programme analyses the condition of the two competitors of this election,Obama and McCain. Recently, there are many investigations implies that Obama has the advantages to win their election and become the new president of USA. But a couples of scholars worries that the researches cannot show the truth.

They indicates that some whites do not show their actual wishes to the investigations because they do not want the others know that they have racial discrimination to the candidate of president,Obama, who is an Afropean. They said they will vote Obama but lastly they will choose McCain as he is white. And I thick it is quite unfair to Obama as the electors of USA concerned more about the colour of the candidates more than their abilities. So i hope that the electors can focus on their political abilities rather than their colour and they can have a fair election.

Good for the Environment

Good for the Environment

Samson

I have just read an article about the "green" exhibition which was held from 27th to 31st of October in AsiaWorld-Expo. The company sold their environmental products and services. Through the activity, the environmental awareness can be raised among Hong Kong people. The fair was divided into four sections - air quality, eco- friendly products, energy efficiency and waste and recycling. I think the air quality is the major problem in Hong Kong. The exhaust fumes released from the vehicles and the smoke produced from power stations pollute the air quality. The city's Air Pollution Index remains high and the situation becomes more serious as more and more people wear masks on the streets. This also speed up the global warming. To improve air quality, we can take public transport but not private cars. I also agree with the writer's view that harmful gas emission can be reduced by retrofitting equipment to become more energy efficient, and reducing overall electricity consumption and using clean fuel. Moreover, we can develop more renewable energy sources such as wind energy, solar energy and geothermal energy. In our classroom, the air ducts accumulate plenty of bacteria. It is considerable that all the classrooms should install air-duct cleaners. When the ducts are cleaned, the bacteria count and respirable suspended particles will be lower and the air-conditioning will improve too.

Food with Melamine

Food with Melamine

Hoibe Au

Recently, there were a lot of news about different kinds of food were tainted by melamine, especially for the milk powder is made in China. This news triggered off a panic among citizens whose children have had milk powder or others kind of milk products for years. Under the investigation of different Departments in China, the latest news suggested by China's state-run media announced that the toxic chemical melamine, which has been found in milk and eggs, is probably being mixed into animal feed. In short, contamination could be widespread throughout the food chain. That's means whatever we eat, we may risk of losing our life. This is a exceedingly terrifying news for citizens.
However, we could do nothing for this. It is discouraging and we can not help it. We could just hope the China government can fix this problem as soon as possible and try to avoid any food that may tainted by melamine.

Food from China

Food from China
Terry Chan 6B

I have just read an article from South China Morning Post.
The article is talking about the melamine,a harmful substance, found from the eggs by the Hong Kong's Government. The eggs were transferred form Mainland to Hong Kong. This is the first time discover the eggs having this harmful substance. I am worried about the pollution of melamine spreading to the non-processing food.
But how can we avoid eating those polluted food? I don't know why so many food were polluted. The first things I knew was the powdered milk. Then is the snacks. Now in turn to eggs. The next one will be rice? Meat? Vegetable?
How can we ensure the basic food are safe? I think the government have responsibility to control these situations. The most emergency thing is strict up the quality of food. Check thoroughly. I think this may make our life safe.

Ban Trading Ivory Products Online

Ban Trading Ivory Products Online

Leung Tsz Fung 6B

This article is found in young post of South China Morning Post and it is talking about the Ebay. The Ebay decided to ban the sale of ivory products and they said that it is the best way to protect the endangered elephants. Because in every year, there is more than twenty thousands elephants slaughtered for their tusks that the Ebay take action to protect the elephants.
In the article, it said that there is over one thousand items from endangered animals every week. When I have read the article, I think the Ebay that was doing very well but I feel unhappy of the information because of the great number of the items. Also, for the elephants, we’ll only need the ivory to make ivory products, it is very cruel to the elephants and it is also for other animals. So I support the Ebay and happy of that, but unfortunately, the Ebay will still allow the sale of some itmes which contain a small amount of ivory. I think the Ebay should not allow all the ivory products to protect the elephants. So that people who kill the elephants for ivory will decrease and the number of elephants can increase. The elephants will not be extinction. I hope that the Ebay can the elephants and other companies can follow the policy of the Ebay to help all endangered animals and protect them.

Jobless Rate

Jobless Rate

Wong Ka Hing, Tom 6B

I have just read a news about the continuously enhancement of jobless rate. The government warned that more and more businesses would fall victim to the global financial turmoil because of the worsening unemployment; however, some economists said, it is only a start of a vicious cycle, it signified that the jobless rate will rises rapidly in the coming year.

I think the jobless rate is only a bad effect that directly reflects the economic crisis in the entire world, included Hong Kong. Not only the jobless people are the victims of the global economic crisis, but also all the HongKongers. Under this economic condition, the prices of everything are peak; however, their pitiful salary are not enhance in the mean time. It is beyond dispute that the companies are also affected by the global financial turmoil; nevertheless, the influence on them is relatively small; therefore, I think the big companies should bear the responsibility to low down their employers’ life stress, and to tide over this economic crisis together.

In short, I think the effects and also the side effects of this global financial turmoil have already spread in numerous territories and cause a lot of severe problems, hope this windstorm will far away from us in the foreseeable future.
